Luciano began to gain power, creating distrust in Maranzano. He was taken by Maranzano's men and tortured to give up information about the mob but did not yield. This experience resulted in Luciano forever being remembered as "Lucky."
Luciano worked as Maranzano's second-in-command until he learned of Maranzano's plan to assassinate Vito Genovese and himself. Luciano decided to strike first. He arranged for Maranzano to be assassinated in his office in the New York Central Building on September 10, 1931. This event, orchestrated by Luciano, represented the peaceful cooperation of the mobs that the "Americanization" movement, or the Combination, was aimed toward. Hover over image for description
